What is ubuntu?
Ubuntu is an operating system, like Windows or Mac OSX, that you can use for free! You may be wondering, how can an entire operating system be free? It's because ubuntu has a community of people who want to contribute to the well-being of ubuntu.
Ubuntu is also based off of Linux/UNIX, which means that ubuntu operates in the same manner as a computer with unix installed would. Mac OSX is also based off of the UNIX architecture, but it is slightly modified.
What makes Windows different from UNIX/Linux?
Windows is an entirely different system when compared to UNIX. If you look at the system directories in Windows and compare them to ones in UNIX, you will notice how differently things are set up - here are some images of the main filesystems of windows/ubuntu:
As you can see, there are some differences. In Windows, things are organized in 3 categories: Documents, Programs and System files. In Linux (ubuntu in this picture), things aren't organized the same - they are simply categorized; for instance, if you look at the directory names, you see "dev", "boot", "home", "etc", "tmp", and so forth. Each one of these directories has a specific purpose, and that purpose is very important.
Now that you've read this and gotten a little insight about what makes ubuntu different from windows, you can delve into things a bit more. Head over to the stories section and look around.
